Reminder: Brevard County is still under a fertilizer ban (June 1 through September 30) to help us prevent more damage to a wonderful natural resource, the Indian River Lagoon.
prune dead branches
August and September are still peak months in the hurricane season.
Be sure to prune dead branches from your trees and shrubs so they don’t become projectiles in strong winds.
prepare your garden
It is almost time for fall vegetables and herbs!! The planting season is approaching and it’s important to prepare your bed properly.
Remove grass and weeds and till the soil deeply, then add plenty of organic matter—such as cow manure, grass clippings, or compost.
Join us on August 13th at 1pm to learn more about composting and improving your soil for the fall gardening season!!
watch for insect damage
The best way to prevent pest infestations is to pick them off before they become a problem. Plant flowers to encourage predators such as ladybugs and lacewings. If it is out of hand, apply insecticidal soap or horticultural oil sprays when necessary.
prevent mosquitoes
Help prevent mosquito breeding by emptying any containers of standing water, which is where mosquitoes like to lay their eggs.
Or, use “mosquito dunks” in standing water (such as birdbaths) to prevent mosquito breeding.
boost your bananas
Bananas thrive on nitrogen; sprinkle grass clippings around the base of banana trees to give them a boost.
prune perennials
During this time, your perennials may be overgrown and going to seed. Cut them back now so they will grow back fuller and bloom again.
Don’t forget to collect the seeds and use the cuttings for propagation!
prune poinsettias
If you have any poinsettias planted in your landscape, this is the last time to prune them back to promote winter blooming. Cut back one-third of the growth on both your potted poinsettias and those in the landscape.
